Ruhlman on Trends

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:35:36 PDT
Interesting stuff here: Michael Ruhlman called for readers to share with him what they thought were the next food trends. The return of lard, growing your own food, and making your own charcuterie, cheese and preserves were frequent suggestions. Can we add any here?

United States Economy: Survival of the Unfittest

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 17:00:18 PDT
I would like to begin this post with a brief excerpt from an article in the latest Time Magazine article titled, “The Federal Job Machine.” “At the end of January ‘07, President George W. Bush labored to make the case that the economy is “strong,” using the word eight times in one speech in Peoria, Ill. In terms of the basic indicators of economic growth (now 3.5% annually) and unemployment at 4.6%, he’s right. But when you consider that 2% of the current U.S. economic activity is the product

IP in the News: Some Fashion Designers Sue Innovators; Others Just Innovate

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 18:53:47 PDT
The March 31 issue of Business Week had an interesting article on recent efforts by some fashion designers to sue their copiers, "Put a Patent on That Pleat." Stuart Weitzman and Diane von Furstenberg sued a couple competitors, including Target, which copied von Furstenberg's "spotted frog" print. Target spinelessly caved in and stopped selling its frog knockoffs, saying it respected others' "intellectual property." This is the kind of stuff Ayn Rand meant when she talked about "the sanction of

Reality for Rising Food Prices....

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 17:21:11 PDT
Hundreds of millions of people have moved from poverty into the global economy over the past decade in Asia. Theyre eating twice a day, instead of once, and propelling rapid urbanization. Their demand for food staples and once unthinkable luxuries like meat is pushing up prices. At the same time, the rising price of commodities over the past year has largely tracked the declining parity of the beleaguered dollar. Rice prices have shot up in dollar terms, far less against the euro. Countries like

Fabulous Dolphins and Whales Die From Neglect

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 05:29:13 PDT
Whales have been important to communities around the world for thousands of years. They have provided meat, fat, tools (from whale bone), leather and gut. These fabulous creatures have been (and still are), so useful that they have been over exploited and their numbers are rapidly dropping. A recent survey showed that there are eleven species of whale around Canada but seven of these are now endangered. Similar trends have been noted in other parts of the world. Human activity is the biggest s

Rice rationing

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 07:41:15 PDT
Food rationing cannot be good news, and when it is reported to happen in one of the richest countries in the world it is even worse. I’m pretty skeptical about the real reasons behind the rice shortages in Wall-Mart stores, and the publishing of this story now. I’m pretty sure, however, that there is no shortage in the corn supply….

Democracy is still a GOOD thing, right?

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 11:16:04 PDT
more people are engaged and paying attention to the issues in this election that ever before - that's good for the American people. No. 2, by the time we get a nominee, and start campaigning against McCain, our candidate's dirty laundry will be old news, while McCain's issues will sound like revelations. So, this isn't where the problem comes in.

Canadian socialist IRONY DU JOUR: CBC calls Zimbabwe’s media “state-run”

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 12:35:21 PDT
Canadian socialist IRONY DU JOUR: CBC calls Zimbabwe’s media “state-run” This morning, the state-run, state-owned CBC Newsworld state-media employed news anchor, Suhana Meharchand, referred to Zimbabwe’s “state-run news media” and how they are accusing the political opposition of treason. Canada’s state-owned, state-run CBC never refers to itself that way! Now. Countdown to liberals and sundry leftist and downright Marxist CBC apologists emailing me those seething reprimands insisting

Mike on “Divided We Stand” Book One

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 05:29:01 PDT
Check out this big blowout interview with several of the writers and artists on X-Men: Divided We Stand #1 at Comic Book Resources. Lots of interesting insights as usual, including Mike’s response to the question “Regarding the characters chosen for this book - why were they were selected?” The cool thing about DWS - which has been pointed out in some of the reviews - is that you get the sense there are as many potential stories as there are mutants: that these snapshots are skimming the surfa
